A Time For Choosing
Good Evening;
I’m Sylvia Sullivan, district resident, taxpayer, business owner and concerned citizen.
For this board, it truly is a time for choosing. You have a very exciting opportunity for our students. Before you, is a chance to make history for our district by naming the new high school after a transformational, inspirational and exceptional individual – Ronald Reagan!
And yes, I have an agenda, one that most in this room would support. The agenda is to promote all that will improve education and opportunities for our students.
Our beloved former President and California Governor was a very humble person. And he would not impose his name on a school. True, but the naming of the school is not so much for him but it is for our students. They deserve to be taught about our exceptional country that produces leaders like Ronald Reagan. They should learn about freedom, liberty and the joy of life he exuded.
As one whose family fled the tyranny and loss of freedom in Cuba, I especially appreciate his stands against evil and his successful triumph for liberty in the former Soviet bloc countries. He understood that “if we lose freedom here, there’s no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.”
Please do not allow misguided political correctness rob our children of this honor. Do not cave to such words as expressed by Robert Welch, Viejas Vice Chairman, saying, “Your actions will have an impact on our future relationship with this district.” Even such opponents had to admit that Reagan supported the Indian Tribal Gov’t Tax Status Act and the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
Yes, Ronald Reagan was a very strong supporter of local control. As the duly elected body for our district you should exercise the authority properly given to you by the people.
Let’s allow the new High School, our students, our community to have this honor. Let it be like a shining city on hill in Alpine –Ronald Reagan High School!

U-T's Lame Response to -What Else is Wrong?
It was a very lame attempt to distract from the point I was making. The editor, Don Sevrens, who wrote the piece, was very defensive about his errors as we spoke on the phone. The point was that on the issue of GUHSD naming the new high school, he rushed to judgement. His liberal knee jerk response was reflected throughout the piece. Just as he had not checked out the facts about me or Louis Russo, he failed to accurately portray the process of naming the new high school.
(my letter to the editor)
If today's U-T editorial regarding the Grossmont Union High School board's advisory panel is as accurate as the facts used to describe me, it's time for the editors to go back to school.
Contrary to what was penned, I do not live in La Mesa, or own a bookkeeping business nor am I a member of the Republican Central Committee. Three out of four incorrect facts about me, set the pace for inaccuracy in the rest of the editorial.
Examining the facts demonstrates that the Board is following a standard process and delegating the initial selection by the appointment of a panel of local concerned citizens. This hardly constitutes diverting attention from education. Simply performing a proper function of naming a new high school.
As for the Helix Charter High School issue, it is imperative that officials do what is necessary to keep our students safe from sexual predators. Again a very proper function of the Board.
East County parents, students and taxpayers appreciate these efforts. Furthermore, the editor is wrong again in representing participation in the political process as a kind of dirty word. It is our American system and no grounds to disqualify one from service to the community. In fact, the only place stirring up distractions and feuds is on editorial pages of the U-T.
Below is the lame response from the U-T:
For the Record
Editorial had out-of-date references
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 12:05 a.m.
• A Sunday editorial, “What’s in a name?/East County school fight diverts attention from education,” contained out-of-date references to the associations of Sylvia Sullivan and Louis Russo, appointees to an advisory committee helping to find a name for a new high school in Alpine. Sullivan is a former resident of La Mesa, former owner of a bookkeeping business and former Republican County Central Committee member. Russo is a former member of the Alpine Planning Group and San Diego Rural Fire District board. He lists his occupation now as a corporate instructional systems designer.

Searchlight, NV Tea Party
Kylee and I with signs are ready to go
My t-shirt tells what I think of Obama
What an experience it turned out to be! I was fortunate enough to travel to Searchlight, NV, hometown of Harry Reid for the Tea Party event.
Kylee, my 8yr old granddaughter loves Sarah Palin. She was very excited to come with me. We took a very no frills bus trip with about 40 other like minded concerned conservative citizens.
The plan was to leave from Santee on late Friday afternoon to stay at a hotel in Laughlin, NV for the night. The traffic was wild on the 15 so we got to the hotel around midnight. We didn't even care that the phone and TV in the room didn't work. It was straight to bed to get an early start on the big day.
The morning began on a great note as Kylee and I observed five bunny rabbits by the river from our hotel window. After breakfast, we loaded up on the bus heading to Harrah's next door for the Tea Party Express morning press conference.
We were disappointed when we learned that the hotel had rescinded its permission to allow the press conference to take place on its property. Didn't realize old Harry had that much clout.
So it was back on the bus as the winds kicked up, for the short trip into Searchlight. The caravan was an awesome sight as we got closer, patriots lined up as far as the eye could see. Each conveying the message that we the people will be heard.
Of course, the main message was to rid us of Reid! He had a handful of supporters waving signs and giving us the one finger salute. They had posted a line of Reid signs welcoming us to "his country".
We arrived and got off the bus to an amazing sight of thousands and thousands of people hurrying to get to a piece of the desert where the the program had already begun. They had come from all "57" states as Obama would say. They were of all ages, sizes, colors, and backgrounds, united in saving the nation from the slide into socialism. The estimated of the number of people ranged between 7000 up to 30,000. My guess is it was somewhere in the middle.
As we rushed toward the gathering, the winds blew, buffeting my sign. I grabbed Kylee, two heavy folding chairs, the snack bag, purse and sign as we made our way. As the cold wind cut through my light wrap, my arms ached. The thought entered my mind- what was I doing here? We could barely hold our signs and my feet hurt walking on the rocks, big and small. Guess wearing wedge heeled sandals was not a good idea. We walked and walked trying to find a spot to at least see the stage. (Later I realized there was a big screen but somehow I hadn't noticed it.)
At last we found a spot to set up our chairs in the crowd helping to block the wind. The sun had begun to warm things up a bit. The crowd was incredible. Everyone was courteous. Unlike some other types of public gatherings, I didn't hear any foul language.
The excitement exploded as Sarah Palin took the stage. Her inspiring words electrified the people as the crowd roared in agreement and appreciation.
Many terrific speakers followed including: Mark Williams, Roger Hedgecock, Andrew Breitbart, Joe the plumber, Chuck DeVore.
Some of the speakers referred to the media present admonishing them to simply tell the truth about the tea parties. We truly are a wide variety of American citizens united in the common goal of restoring adherence to the Constitution and sanity in the government.
The liberal media seem to have a difficult time believing that it is a genuine grassroots movement. During an interview with a newspaper reporter, he had an odd question. He remarked on the number of signs. then inquired if the signs had been given to the people! After I explained the reality before him, he inquired about my sign. He still found it hard to believe that we are for real unlike the left.
During the exhilarating experience in a sea of red, white and blue and American flags, I understood why we must make the effort and take the stand. Freedom isn't free. It never has been. I watched Kylee enjoy the thrilling day. She even made herself a couple more signs on her own. They said, "No More Taxes" and " Go Sarah Palin". So we will show up, speak out and fight for our God, family and country. In our own way, we will pay the price for our liberty.
(Below are some pictures I took on the adventure. If you scroll to the bottom and view them as numbered they'll be in the right order. I'm still learning how to post)
11. Kylee had a great time posing forpictures and making some new doggie friends.

10. Also present and speaking were Chuck DeVore and Joe the Plumber.

Why Babies Continue to Die
| This is account of what happened at the initiatives committee meeting at the California Republican Party Convention this weekend. It is one reason that babies will continue to die. Albin Rhomberg, presented the parental notification amendment asking for an endorsement. It was endorsed. As I believed that it deserved the endorsement. Then it was my turn to speak in favor of the party endorsing the California Human Rights Amendment. It is in the signature gathering stage and the CRP endorsement would have been helpful in reaching a different group of people. After I was done, Mike Spence said there was someone there to speak in opposition. It was the parental notification person, Albin Rhomberg. He is not a member of the committee or delegate or associate. I'm not even sure he is a Republican. He slammed CHRA- the wording, time, place and scared the candidates by saying it would be bad for them in November. . Then without any time given for me to respond or anyone else to ask a question. Someone tabled it. It was tabled until it qualifies. This blocked it from being brought before the whole convention. Where I believe it stood a good chance of passing. Since it was tabled, it could not be brought up on the floor. So I ended up giving out the petitions and literature with a few helpers. Afterwards, Mr. Rhomberg said he felt compelled since the pro abortion people would not. He claimed CHRA is bad for pro life and for the Republicans. He also said that there are limited resources available yet denied he was doing it to protect his petition. Although during his talk regarding the parental notification petition, he blamed Prop 8 for parental notification's loss last time. I expect attacks from the pro aborts, it is quite another to be stabbed in the back by a so-called fellow pro lifer. The result is division in the pro life movement and no coalition building - opportunities blown. Below is part of my presentation to the initiatives committee and you can check out the CHRA website: www.californiahumanrightsamendment.com/ There once was a time- at its beginning that this party took the lead for human rights in asserting that all humans, including slaves were persons entitled to all human and civil rights. Throughout our history we have been the party standing, leading the battles for such rights for all. Today our party is called to lead in California by joining a vibrant personhood movement taking place in 40 states. The California Human Rights Amendment simply recognizes the fact, truth of the personhood of all human beings from conception to natural death. I urge you to respond to this call by endorsing this effort not only because it is morally right and in the traditions of our party but because it is also politically wise. 1. It energizes the conservative base to activism and involvement since neither of the two major candidates for governor are pro life. Especially the young people ages 18-29, who are becoming increasingly pro life as shown in a recent Marist Poll that found that 58% of them described abortion as "morally wrong". 2. It highlights the dirty little secret that the African American community is targeted for abortion. African American Pastor Walter Hoye who leads the effort for CHRA in California gives as one of his motivations this fact. Although blacks account for only 12% of the US population they account for 37% of all abortions in this country. This is not by accident as a brief review of Planned Parenthood and its history would reveal. There are those who say it can't be done. If we do nothing, they are right. I say if we work together, we can accomplish it if we commit to never quit until we succeed. How long did it take William Wilberfoce to end slavery in England - a lifetime, 45 years. There are some in the pro life movement who oppose this amendment on legal and legalese grounds with multiple definitions of personhood. I believe that words mean what they plainly say without needing a lawyer to explain. We don't need to go down the road of "it depends on what the meaning of "is" is. In this large pro life movement there are family squabbles from time to time. In the end we just want to save babies and no one group has a monopoly on how. I simply ask if you can't help please don't hinder or discourage this valiant grassroots movement sweeping the nation. Instead, encourage the people by endorsing the California Human Rights Amendment. |
