I for one am thankful for those who willing risk it all to fight unspeakable evil.
Hillary Clinton called it “deplorable behavior.”
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said it "I have have seen the footage, and I find the behavior utterly deplorable... I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”

Really? Where is their outrage for the over 50 million unborn dead babies after 39 years this month (January 22nd) of the infamous Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision. It opened the flood gates for the savage destruction of innocent preborn babies. The picture shown below reveals the ugly reality behind the mask of Obama and the Democrats radical "pro choice" agenda.

(Malachi's story is found at:) http://www.priestsforlife.org/resources/abortionimages/babymalachi.htmn

Not a peep of horror was heard by those who so loudly condemned our Marines in battle, when Obama opposed the Born Alive Infants bill and the Partial Birth Abortion Ban. Their silence was deafening as Obama promoted abortion here and abroad as well as forcing tax payers to fund abortion in Obamacare.

Fortunately, there is a great opportunity in the 2012 elections to put in power a pro life conservative Republican and defeat Obama's extremist agenda. The contrast could not more stark - Republicans, the party of life vs. Democrats the anti-life party.

As for now, we can save our outrage where it rightly belongs. While not condoning such pranks, they hardly rise to a level of court martial or death penalty. I choose to stand with our Marines and support the warriors who protect us.

A steadfast commitment to the sanctity of human life is needed more than ever to save the least of us - innocent, defenseless babies. America can either go the way of the heartless Margaret Sanger or the saintly Mother Teresa.

Which is really worthy of our outrage??

"The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it." Margaret Sanger, Women and the New Race (Eugenics Publ.

Obama came to town today. He had a pricey fundraiser luncheon at a home in La Jolla. A few of us could not let the opportunity pass without expressing our desire to defeat his agenda now and in 2012. Although many desired to come out and protest they could not. They still have jobs.

When I arrived, Steve Johnson was already at his post at the busy La Jolla intersection . Soon James Lambert also arrived with his sign - Anybody but Obama for 2012. Diana Davies came with her four wonderful children, ready to take their stand.

We had some media coverage at KUSI & KGTV showed up to tape and interview. Their reporting was pretty fair as they recounted our dismay with Obama and his radical leftist agenda. His failures in the economy, jobs, spending, housing market took center stage. His extreme pro abortion policies were also noted.http://www.10news.com/news/29300434/detail.html

Around 1:45pm James and I went closer to the event house in La Jolla by All Hallows Catholic Church. The church had brought out their flag waving students to catch a glimpse of Obama. A lady driving by parked, borrowed a sign and joined us to give a message to Obama. She wondered where were the Republicans and the Tea Party people. The news later reported that another group, a Tea Party one had protested downtown.

Shortly there after, the police blocked off the streets. This was followed by dozens of motorcycle cops, squad cars, black SUV's and limos. It was as if the king and his entourage had burst onto to the scene totally taking over.

As we stood there, James said he had looked into the Obama limo catching his eye as Obama saw we were not bowing to the great one.

In the end it was a good day. We gave a voice for those who could not - unborn babies and working people. As for Obama, he came, took the money and in just a few hours he was gone. He saw as the polls report, that all around this nation people are working to retire him in 2012.

Circular Firing Squad Redirected?

Victory pic after the platform committee vote - left to right - Mike Spence, (me)Sylvia Sullivan, Celeste Greig and meeting chairman Assemblymen Dan Logue. Obama. Although a serious alarm was sounded as conservatives were caught off guard in the platform drafting committee meeting. This committee passed a new watered down version of the platform. It lacked the previous strong language on the life issue, traditional marriage and the 2nd amendment. The money force behind this is Charles Munger, Jr. When I spoke with him to determine his motivation, he would not own up to his role. He went on about the need to update the platform to appeal to all those hypothetical voters just waiting to join a Democrat light Republican party. However, his determined actions were detailed in a recent Sacrament Bee article. ( http://www.sacbee.com/2011/09/16/3914662/charles-t-munger-jr-puts-more.html)

The sticker says it all, in expressing the winning side at the end of the day.

I attended the convention in LA this past weekend, ready to fight for our winning platform, equipped with stickers for all who wanted one. It read," We Win with Life & Marriage in GOP Platform!" with a red heart in the center.

After the general session adjourned on Sunday the platform committee met to an overflow, standing room only crowd. Due to the great efforts of Mike Spence, Mark Pruner, Jon Fleischman, Tony Krvaric, Ron Nehring, Celeste Greig as well as the voting presence of elected officials - Senator Joel Anderson, Assemblymen Brian Jones, Tim Donnelly, and Mike Morrell among others, resulted in victory. The final vote to keep our strong conservative winning platform was 66 yes, 50 no and 4 not voting.

This is the focus of the Republicans committed to the defeat of Obama to save our country!

The whole tone of the convention was one of civility. Maybe wearing a red heart sticker encouraged this, but I received more hugs and friendly kisses then ever. Even a serious discussion with San Diego moderate Mike McSweeny was respectful. We found much common ground in protecting children, freedoms and small businesses. He even put on a sticker and ended up voting for the conservative platform. Even though he had previously supported the moderate one. He said in essence that the bottom line was that nothing should be done to discourage the precinct volunteers needed. He recognized that affirming party principles is key in motivating those volunteers necessary to win.
Has the circular firing squad really been redirected to those who actually threaten our nation? Our next CRP convention in February will tell. It is then that the delegates will decide if to accept our winning platform to protect Life, Marriage and our 2nd Amendment. All signs point to the conclusion that Party has heard the voters who long for leaders who stand and fight for the principles that formed our great country!

Chaos, Confusion & Conflict - CRA Convention April 2011

There were four police squad cars in the front parking lot as I arrived at the CRA Convention at the Hilton Hotel in Sacramento on Saturday morning. Shockingly, they were there due to problems, even some physical altercation at the CRA convention! Unbelievably, it was a disturbance but at least no arrests. Sadly at a time the sorry state of California needs the strong leadership of CRA we are mired in this mess.

Something is definitely wrong in CRA. For weeks, poison emails flew back and forth as the two candidates, Celeste Grieg, the incumbent and Karen England, the challenger, battled for the state presidency. What should have been a clean competition of different visions for CRA, unfortunately, descended into destructive attacks, insults and even legal action.

I have been active in CRA since the 90's, currently serving as the president of the East County Unit. Consequently, I've attended numerous CRA conventions, this one had to be the most contentious, ranking as one of the worst.
In their desire to correct valid problems in CRA with the endorsement process, the current leadership totally bungled it. They made last minute rules changes. The changes made demands on autonomous units unaccustomed to top down directives in a grassroots up organization. This resulted in people of a volunteer organization, paying to show up at a convention only to learn they would not be seated as delegates. These numbered around 125 delegates ruled ineligible after a nine hours of grueling, ugly process on Saturday. In a departure from the norm, even guests who paid to register, were prevented from entering the sessions. Thus things got heated, I was told, requiring the police to come and restore order when people demanded to enter the session.

The credentials committee meeting dragged on as seated delegates voted out many units' delegates. When it came to discussion regarding the Greater Santee Lakeside unit, I wanted to offer assurance that the unit is not a fake one. On the contrary, our unit works with Frank Hilliker's group co-hosting forums, endorsing conventions and other events. I was not allowed to speak.
Even Karen England, the challenger to the president, I know has been involved with CRA for years was denied delegate status.
Ironically, Senator Joel Anderson, who our local units worked hard to get elected was voted out as a delegate. The Senator was able to briefly address the convention at the dinner Saturday night only because Assemblyman Dan Logue gave him some of his time. His remarks are on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N3tTKVY_R4

We were told that during the sessions, due to the still pending litigation, no video taping, recording or photos would be allowed except for the official CRA newspaper reporter. I made a simple request to be able to take a picture or two for my blog in case something exciting took place. The leadership and most members seemed inclined until Baron Night objected. He spoke against it, so it was denied failing to meet the 2/3rds threshold. They really didn't have to worry. The picture I was hoping to get was one of Celeste and Karen shaking hands in reconciliation. The shot I wanted was of the moment of recognizing and thanking Peggy Mew for her years of work and countless hours of faithful service when a new membership secretary was elected. And to capture the moment,of appreciation to those who served on the board so faithfully now replaced in the election. Actually, my camera would have stayed in my purse since it didn't happen.

The election resulted in Celeste winning over Karen by a vote of 165 to 119. Celeste's slate also swept the contested races.

This weekend reminded me of a quote, however distorted, from the Vietnam War years, "It became necessary to destroy the village in order to save it"

(In the interest of full disclosure, I endorsed Celeste early on in the campaign. Both ladies are long time, strong pro family conservatives who are professing Christians. It makes what happened even more regrettable.
Lastly, at the end of the convention we voted to at least refund the registration fees to those who paid and were denied entrance to the sessions.)

Farewell Voepel!

Farewell to Mayor Randy Voepel
Who did leave the GOP
But few could really tell
For at the Party, well
We did not ever see!

Unsung Heroes Dr. King Would Salute Today

If Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today, he would surely salute these unsung heroes. In the same week that celebrates the birthday of the civil rights champion also marks a devastatingly dark Supreme Court decision. This January 22, 2011 will be 38th anniversary of the infamous Roe v Wade ruling. It paved the way for abortion on demand in the US resulting in the deaths of 53 million children.

Today there are many heroes who fight for civil rights for preborn children of all races. The following are but a few summarized stories of so many true accounts.

For those who live in San Diego County, it is likely that you have seen an RV covered in a powerful message for life, for the family, for marriage and/or righteousness. Since the nineties, Ronald Brock has driven countless miles with a message for life. His vehicle is often covered with gruesome pictures of aborted babies bodies. He has traveled the country from New York City, Washington DC, Florida, Michigan, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, California and parts in between. He mostly travels by himself. He's encountered intense, sometimes violent opposition. He has been run off the road, had his vehicle vandalized, been assaulted, and falsely arrested. Yet he continues on the road proclaiming the truth as guardian angels watch over him.
He was just at the Mt Soledad Memorial Rally driving around with the message none could miss.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hwD0d4Zldaw/TTTGO_0ivqI/AAAAAAAAAKE/u3uhq0aX8fA/s200/IMG_1437.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563289400661687970" />

Then there is a couple, Tim and Colette Wilson, who met at a Rescue (a protest at an abortion clinic where rescuers risk arrest in order to save unborn babies). This began a courtship that ended in marriage. Colette, a pro life attorney, has assisted in numerous legal battles in the defense of life. For years they have reached out to pregnant women in crisis pleading for the life of the child. This couple's commitment to life is demonstrated by the four children they adopted. These precious little ones were saved from abortion. Their abortion minded moms chose life and adoption when shown the facts in a loving manner. Lucy, their youngest was born this past July 26th.

In the mid nineties a sincere, bold young man showed up at a La Mesa, CA abortion clinic. He broke the rules usually enforced against the regular side walk counselors, who were not allowed in the parking lot. Troy was observed quietly speaking with a couple debating whether or not to go in for an abortion. After awhile the security guard made him leave the parking lot. His calling confirmed, he joined the group with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Operation Rescue's numbers in those days, had been greatly reduced. The unfair media coverage, the police brutality, the unjust courts and costly lawsuits had shocked and frightened off many.
Troy slowly gathered the willing and adjusted the tactics to save unborn children. His changes enabled the pro lifers to save children without long term incarceration or bankrupting lawsuits and trials.
Over the years he survived the learning curve of dealing with the media, police and pro abortion lawyers. His statements in the media went from brash to polished in his presentations. The results were tremendous in San Diego for example, over 40 abortionists quit doing abortions by retiring or moving away. Also over 20 abortion clinics closed.
In 2002, Troy Newman, pro life activist Cheryl Sullenger, along with their families moved Operation Rescue to Wichita, Kansas to focus on late term abortionists like George Tiller. Today, OR under Troy's leadership, continues a very effective life saving national ministry.
http://www.operationrescue.org/

Lastly, there is Lila Rose. Young, attractive and articulate, Lila is a student activist at UCLA. At fifteen years old she founded a youth pro life organization, Live Action. Cleverly using new media she has been ripping away Planned Parenthood's mask of respectability. Courageously, she lead undercover stings into Planned Parenthood clinics. Then she exposed their non reporting of sexual abuse by adult men of underage girls by posting the evidence on the internet. The publicity generated has been very costly to Planned Parenthood. Such young people infuse new blood into the movement to secure future victories. Lila continues to defend the defenseless.
http://liveaction.org/lila-rose

These heroes too, have a dream - that someday all life will be respected. You have a very exciting opportunity for our students. Before you, is a chance to make history for our district by naming the new high school after a transformational, inspirational and exceptional individual – Ronald Reagan!
And yes, I have an agenda, one that most in this room would support. The agenda is to promote all that will improve education and opportunities for our students.

Our beloved former President and California Governor was a very humble person. And he would not impose his name on a school. True, but the naming of the school is not so much for him but it is for our students. They deserve to be taught about our exceptional country that produces leaders like Ronald Reagan. They should learn about freedom, liberty and the joy of life he exuded.

As one whose family fled the tyranny and loss of freedom in Cuba, I especially appreciate his stands against evil and his successful triumph for liberty in the former Soviet bloc countries. He understood that “if we lose freedom here, there’s no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.”

Please do not allow misguided political correctness rob our children of this honor. Do not cave to such words as expressed by Robert Welch, Viejas Vice Chairman, saying, “Your actions will have an impact on our future relationship with this district.” Even such opponents had to admit that Reagan supported the Indian Tribal Gov’t Tax Status Act and the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Yes, Ronald Reagan was a very strong supporter of local control. As the duly elected body for our district you should exercise the authority properly given to you by the people.
Let’s allow the new High School, our students, our community to have this honor. Let it be like a shining city on hill in Alpine –Ronald Reagan High School!

I Choose Chuck!

Yes, I encourage you too, to choose Chuck Devore for U.S. Senate. He has a proven conservative track record of votes and positions to advance our principles.
Carly, while sounding good, lacks this important background. In which case, I looked to her campaign to judge her character and commitment. Sadly, she broke her first campaign promise to me.

In February, I was invited to a small group meeting with Carly Fiorina. Granted, she speaks well and has a compelling story. We were asked to submit our questions in writing and she answered a few. Of course time was up and many were left unanswered. Carly assured us that those answers would be emailed to our email addresses we had turned in. This is June and to date no email has come from Carly. Normally this would not be a big deal. Obviously candidates are very busy and it's hard to fulfill such a promise. At the very least an aide should have responded apologizing for the oversight explaining the campaign schedule , etc.

Since she lacks a track record, is the above account a forboding insight to the value of her word? For instance she is now against Obamacare, and now against amnesty for illegals and has flip flopped on the Arizona immigration law. Also troubling are positions that remained unchanged - her support for Sotomayor and praise for Jesse Jackson.

Experience has taught tough lessons that demonstrate it is imperative to elect tested conservatives and that talk is cheap.

Our vote must be based on more than money and gender. Our vote must count for character and proven conservatism - please choose Chuck Devore.

Below are my elections selections -

Duncan Hunter - 52nd Congressional District

John Eastman - Attorney General

Joel Anderson - 36th State Senate District

Bill Wells - 77th Assembly District

Martin Garrick - 74th Assembly District

Bill Horn - Board of Supervisors #5

Jay La Suer - Sheriff

Jeff Olson - Assessor/Recorder/ClerkSuperior

Court Judges:

Craig Candelore office #14

Larry Kincaid office #34

Bill Trask office #21

Prop 14 vote NO

Chula Vista Prop G - support

U-T's Lame Response to -What Else is Wrong?

Update - The U-T's response printed below, to errors in the editorial of 05/09/10, entitled "What's in a Name?"

It was a very lame attempt to distract from the point I was making. The editor, Don Sevrens, who wrote the piece, was very defensive about his errors as we spoke on the phone. The point was that on the issue of GUHSD naming the new high school, he rushed to judgement. His liberal knee jerk response was reflected throughout the piece. Just as he had not checked out the facts about me or Louis Russo, he failed to accurately portray the process of naming the new high school.

(my letter to the editor)

If today's U-T editorial regarding the Grossmont Union High School board's advisory panel is as accurate as the facts used to describe me, it's time for the editors to go back to school.

Contrary to what was penned, I do not live in La Mesa, or own a bookkeeping business nor am I a member of the Republican Central Committee. Three out of four incorrect facts about me, set the pace for inaccuracy in the rest of the editorial.

Examining the facts demonstrates that the Board is following a standard process and delegating the initial selection by the appointment of a panel of local concerned citizens. This hardly constitutes diverting attention from education. Simply performing a proper function of naming a new high school.

As for the Helix Charter High School issue, it is imperative that officials do what is necessary to keep our students safe from sexual predators. Again a very proper function of the Board.

East County parents, students and taxpayers appreciate these efforts. Furthermore, the editor is wrong again in representing participation in the political process as a kind of dirty word. It is our American system and no grounds to disqualify one from service to the community. In fact, the only place stirring up distractions and feuds is on editorial pages of the U-T.

Below is the lame response from the U-T:

For the Record
Editorial had out-of-date references
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 12:05 a.m.
• A Sunday editorial, “What’s in a name?/East County school fight diverts attention from education,” contained out-of-date references to the associations of Sylvia Sullivan and Louis Russo, appointees to an advisory committee helping to find a name for a new high school in Alpine. Sullivan is a former resident of La Mesa, former owner of a bookkeeping business and former Republican County Central Committee member. Russo is a former member of the Alpine Planning Group and San Diego Rural Fire District board. I was fortunate enough to travel to Searchlight, NV, hometown of Harry Reid for the Tea Party event.

Kylee, my 8yr old granddaughter loves Sarah Palin. She was very excited to come with me. We took a very no frills bus trip with about 40 other like minded concerned conservative citizens.

The plan was to leave from Santee on late Friday afternoon to stay at a hotel in Laughlin, NV for the night. The traffic was wild on the 15 so we got to the hotel around midnight. We didn't even care that the phone and TV in the room didn't work. It was straight to bed to get an early start on the big day.

The morning began on a great note as Kylee and I observed five bunny rabbits by the river from our hotel window. After breakfast, we loaded up on the bus heading to Harrah's next door for the Tea Party Express morning press conference.

We were disappointed when we learned that the hotel had rescinded its permission to allow the press conference to take place on its property. Didn't realize old Harry had that much clout.

So it was back on the bus as the winds kicked up, for the short trip into Searchlight. The caravan was an awesome sight as we got closer, patriots lined up as far as the eye could see. Each conveying the message that we the people will be heard.

Of course, the main message was to rid us of Reid! He had a handful of supporters waving signs and giving us the one finger salute. They had posted a line of Reid signs welcoming us to "his country".

We arrived and got off the bus to an amazing sight of thousands and thousands of people hurrying to get to a piece of the desert where the the program had already begun. They had come from all "57" states as Obama would say. They were of all ages, sizes, colors, and backgrounds, united in saving the nation from the slide into socialism. The estimated of the number of people ranged between 7000 up to 30,000. My guess is it was somewhere in the middle.

As we rushed toward the gathering, the winds blew, buffeting my sign. I grabbed Kylee, two heavy folding chairs, the snack bag, purse and sign as we made our way. As the cold wind cut through my light wrap, my arms ached. The thought entered my mind- what was I doing here? We could barely hold our signs and my feet hurt walking on the rocks, big and small. Guess wearing wedge heeled sandals was not a good idea. We walked and walked trying to find a spot to at least see the stage. (Later I realized there was a big screen but somehow I hadn't noticed it.)

At last we found a spot to set up our chairs in the crowd helping to block the wind. The sun had begun to warm things up a bit. The crowd was incredible. Everyone was courteous. Unlike some other types of public gatherings, I didn't hear any foul language.

The excitement exploded as Sarah Palin took the stage. Her inspiring words electrified the people as the crowd roared in agreement and appreciation.

Many terrific speakers followed including: Mark Williams, Roger Hedgecock, Andrew Breitbart, Joe the plumber, Chuck DeVore.

Some of the speakers referred to the media present admonishing them to simply tell the truth about the tea parties. We truly are a wide variety of American citizens united in the common goal of restoring adherence to the Constitution and sanity in the government.

The liberal media seem to have a difficult time believing that it is a genuine grassroots movement. During an interview with a newspaper reporter, he had an odd question. He remarked on the number of signs. then inquired if the signs had been given to the people! After I explained the reality before him, he inquired about my sign. He still found it hard to believe that we are for real unlike the left.

During the exhilarating experience in a sea of red, white and blue and American flags, I understood why we must make the effort and take the stand. Freedom isn't free. It never has been. I watched Kylee enjoy the thrilling day. She even made herself a couple more signs on her own. They said, "No More Taxes" and " Go Sarah Palin". So we will show up, speak out and fight for our God, family and country. In our own way, we will pay the price for our liberty.

(Below are some pictures I took on the adventure. If you scroll to the bottom and view them as numbered they'll be in the right order. I'm still learning how to post)

11. Kylee had a great time posing for
pictures and making some new doggie friends.

10. It is one reason that babies will continue to die.

Albin Rhomberg, presented the parental notification amendment asking for an endorsement. It was endorsed. As I believed that it deserved the endorsement.

Then it was my turn to speak in favor of the party endorsing the California Human Rights Amendment. It is in the signature gathering stage and the CRP endorsement would have been helpful in reaching a different group of people. After I was done, Mike Spence said there was someone there to speak in opposition. It was the parental notification person, Albin Rhomberg. He is not a member of the committee or delegate or associate. I'm not even sure he is a Republican.
He slammed CHRA- the wording, time, place and scared the candidates by saying it would be bad for them in November. .
Then without any time given for me to respond or anyone else to ask a question. Someone tabled it. It was tabled until it qualifies. This blocked it from being brought before the whole convention. Where I believe it stood a good chance of passing. Since it was tabled, it could not be brought up on the floor. So I ended up giving out the
petitions and literature with a few helpers.

Afterwards, Mr. Rhomberg said he felt compelled since the pro abortion people would not. He claimed CHRA is bad for pro life and for the Republicans. He also said that there are limited resources available yet denied he was doing it to protect his petition. Although during his talk regarding the parental notification petition, he blamed Prop 8 for parental notification's loss last time.
I expect attacks from the pro aborts, it is quite another to be stabbed in the back by a so-called fellow pro lifer.

The result is division in the pro life movement and no coalition building -
opportunities blown.

Below is part of my presentation to the initiatives committee and you can check out the CHRA website: www.californiahumanrightsamendment.com/

There once was a time- at its beginning that this party took the lead for human rights in asserting that all humans, including slaves were persons entitled to all human and civil rights. Throughout our history we have been the party standing, leading the battles for such rights for all.

Today our party is called to lead in California by joining a vibrant personhood movement taking place in 40 states. The California Human Rights Amendment simply recognizes the fact, truth of the personhood of all human beings from conception to natural death.

I urge you to respond to this call by endorsing this effort not only because it is morally right and in the traditions of our party but because it is also politically wise.

1. It energizes the conservative base to activism and involvement since neither of the two major candidates for governor are pro life. Especially the young people ages 18-29, who are becoming increasingly pro life as shown in a recent Marist Poll that found that 58% of them described abortion as "morally wrong".

2. It highlights the dirty little secret that the African American community is targeted for abortion. African American Pastor Walter Hoye who leads the effort for CHRA in California gives as one of his motivations this fact. Although blacks account for only 12% of the US population they account for 37% of all abortions in this country. This is not by accident as a brief review of Planned Parenthood and its history would reveal.

There are those who say it can't be done. If we do nothing, they are right. I say if we work together, we can accomplish it if we commit to never quit until we succeed. How long did it take William Wilberfoce to end slavery in England - a lifetime, 45 years.

There are some in the pro life movement who oppose this amendment on legal and legalese grounds with multiple definitions of personhood. I believe that words mean what they plainly say without needing a lawyer to explain. We don't need to go down the road of "it depends on what the meaning of "is" is.
In this large pro life movement there are family squabbles from time to time. In the end we just want to save babies and no one group has a monopoly on how. I simply ask if you can't help please don't hinder or discourage this valiant grassroots movement sweeping the nation. Instead, encourage the people by endorsing the California Human Rights Amendment.

About Last Night 2/26/10

Last night it was standing room only, as an estimated 100 people met at the Ranch House Restaurant for the CRA candidate forum in East County. The evening began with a reverential reciting of the Lords Prayer in song led by Father Halverson.

The candidates for Sheriff were up first. Jim Duffy and Bruce Ruff were present. Unit presidents, Frank Hilliker (Greater Santee Unit) and Sylvia Sullivan (East County CRA) ran the forum. Each candidate was given one minute for opening and closing statements. The majority of the time was spent in answering questions submitted in writing by the members and guests.

To be considered for endorsement each candidate had been mailed a questionnaire to be filled out and returned before the meeting night. CRA is committed to the importance of knowing a candidate’s core values and principles. The questionnaire also acts as a tool for accountability.

Ruff explained his refusal to answer his questionnaire except for one gun questions as,
“…the law enforcement member is not legally entitled to let their personal opinion about laws impact the enforcement of laws.” This was a new approach for Ruff, since he has answered our questionnaires in the past. The questions are designed to reveal the fundamental principles that guide the candidate. It would seem that he could reveal in writing, his views and still enforce the law.
Duffy was questioned about his support for hate crimes legislation and the adoption of children by same-sex couples. His explanation was he had added that his “oath is to support the law.” It became confusing, contradictory when he responded that he opposed abortion on demand and taxpayer funded abortions. Yet they, too, are the current law.
Duffy was asked in light of the illegal activity that takes place at the Gay Pride Parade, if he would be marching in it. He said that he had already marched in the parade when he became a candidate. He would continue to do so as Sheriff.
Bruce Ruff said he would not march in the Gay Pride Parade.
Both Duffy and Ruff expressed their support for the second amendment. They both disagreed with the methods of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Bill Gore and Jay La Suer were unable to attend due to prior commitments
The questionnaire scores were as follows: Bill Gore 0% (none turned in), Bruce Ruff 4%
Jim Duffy 81% and Jay La Suer 100%

Then the 36th District State Senate candidates were next. This included Kenneth Dickson, Greg Stephens and Jeff Stone. Joel Anderson was to attend but was delayed at another event. His chief of staff Collin McGlashen, spoke briefly on Anderson’s behalf.
Dickson, Stephens and Stone expressed strong pro-life and pro-family positions. All three stressed fiscal responsibility and agreed that Californians are taxed enough already.

Stone forcefully criticized Anderson several times regarding his campaign contribution sources and Anderson’s vote to confirm Abel Maldonado.
On a light but sad note, the candidates were asked if they had ever been accused of having an affair. This was considering the damage done to the Republican Party by Mike Duvall’s problems. Thankfully, they all answered -NO.
All four candidates answered their questionnaires and received perfect scores as strong conservatives.

The final part of the forum dealt with the 77th Assembly candidates. All four were present – Richard Bailey, Brian Jones, Christine Rubin and Bill Wells.
Early on, Rubin was asked about her support for adoption of children by same-sex couples. She explained that for the sake of the child who might end up in an institution, she favored such adoptions. This drew strong responses from Wells and Jones who stated that it was for the well being of the child that they opposed these adoptions.
In an unusual move Bailey said he agreed with Rubin also favoring same-sex couples adopting children. He stated he could not recall how he answered his questionnaire. A quick look revealed he had opposed it. In it he also opposed the Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman. It also showed he supported physician-assisted suicide legislation.
Rubin was further asked about her support of medical marijuana usage as is currently allowed under Proposition 215. Rubin went into details of the many problems Proposition 215 has caused. When asked if she had changed her position to now opposing Prop 215. She confirmed her support for Prop 215.
All candidates described themselves as strong fiscal conservatives. Their questionnaire scores were as follows: Bailey 84%, Rubin 92%, Jones 100% and Wells 100%.

The evening ended on a positive note with many attendees joining and/or renewing their CRA memberships. They are looking forward to the next CRA event since this was an interesting and informative experience.

Sylvia Sullivan

East County CRA President

Civil Rights Denied!

The moral issue of our time is abortion. Since 1973, a whole class of human beings- the most innocent and defenseless have been stripped of all human rights.
The slaughter of over 50 million unborn children has unleashed unspeakable evil.

This includes:

Complete loss of respect for life- dead babies found in dumpsters, trash and toilets
Partial birth abortions, infanticide, abortion as birth control, gender selection abortions
Women maimed physically, emotionally or dead at the hands of abortionists
Minors harmed by abortions without parental notification or non reporting of sexual abuse
Men using women by relying on abortion to avoid responsibility
Fathers denied any rights in deciding if his child lives or dies

The above list only begins to describe the ramifications of abortion on demand, at anytime for any reason and at taxpayers expense.

As we remember today all those lives destroyed by this infamous Supreme Court travesty. type='text'>Hopes, Change and a Dream

Amid the opulent inaugural glitter and historic glow of the new presidency ofBarack Obama is a choice between death and decency. He enters the White House promising hopeful change to fulfill a dream for all Americans. Yet how can it be, when a whole class of Americans, innocent, defenseless, is treated as trash. The point is illustrated by a former abortion clinic employee, who gave this following account:
A baby was 35 weeks gestation whenthe abortion was performed. The baby came out and was moving. The abortionist took a utensil and stabbed the baby in the left ribcage. She twisted it until the baby stopped moving.
At another abortion clinic in Florida, an AfricanAmerican baby girl was also born during the abortion. The baby was shoved intoa bag and tossed on to the roof of the clinic. She died a horrible death gasping for air. It is clear that preborn babies remain the new Blacks, a whole class lacking in the most basic human rights.
Obama’s lofty pronouncements of caring for the least of these or being his brother’s keeper conflict with campaign promises to the Planned Parenthood camp. During the campaign, he was careful to cover his radical pro-abortion extremism. At times it did slip out. For instance, he stated regarding his young daughters that “... if they make a mistake, I don’twant them punished with a baby.” Equating a baby with punishment is a most radical pro abortion view. When asked by Pastor Rick Warren, at what point does a baby get human rights,Obama said, “…answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade.” Reality exposes his answer as fiction. The truth is so simple a child readily understands it as expressed by the elephant in Dr.Seuss’s story Horton Hears a Who, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
If Obama wants every American life protected, he can begin by changing his position on FOCA, the Freedom of Choice Act. If he signs this bill as promised, all pro life protections across the states will be invalidated. This would include; Partial Birth Abortion bans, restrictions on abortion funding, parental involvement laws and conscience clauses. This extremist position on abortion is consistently opposed by a majority ofAmericans. Two recent polls the Harris Interactive survey and the Marist College Institute of Public Opinion poll confirm it. They revealed that a small minority, only 9% and 8% respectively, of Americans favor abortion on demand at any time, for any reason and at taxpayer’s expense. Obama will choose death and destruction or life and liberty. He can become Lincoln like by restoring personhood to the preborn. This January 22, 2009 marks the anniversary of 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion and its legacy of over 50 million dead preborn children. It is a hope and a dream that Obama will reverse his FOCA promise. That is change we can all live with.

Won't Get Fooled Again

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..."

Hopefully these will not become prophetic lyrics by the rock band the Who.
The latest disclosures about Obama reveal a picture of radical, socialist, Marxist core beliefs and connections. His expressed desire to "spread the wealth around" is cause for concern to those with some knowledge of history.

Because my family came from Cuba, I know its sad story offers valuable lessons. In the late 1950's the Cuban people were taken in by an eloquent, young leader who promised change. He promised to give the people all they needed - education, medical care, help for the poor, justice and equality.

The people wanted to believe that Fidel's definition of change would save them. Only too late did the people realize Fidel was a tyrant. By then he had already taken complete control of guns, the press, jobs, food, travel, education, businesses and farms. The people were forced to submit, flee, or face imprisonment and execution.

My grandfather, Americo Sera, had worked hard to have a small ranch and tile factory in Holguin, Cuba when Castro took over. One day Fidel's soldiers came to his home located just above the tile factory in town. The soldiers led by my grandfather's own daughter, my aunt, had come to "spread the wealth". Americo's home was declared much too big for one family. The house was divided up and two other families moved in to share the wealth. At the point of a gun, he had to share the fruits of his labor with those who had not earned it. He and my grandmother, along with many other relatives were blessed to escape to America for freedom and opportunity.

One could say there's no way that could ever happen in the US. Cubans never imagined it would happen to them, either. Wisdom recognizes the slippery slope from socialism to the deliberate, slow loss of freedoms. The price of liberty is vigilance to guard the Constitution from Obama who views it as "a charter of negative liberties" He sees it as an obstacle to the "redistributive change" he wants to impose.

Another common thread in the socialist, Marxist mindset is a cold disregard for the sanctity of human life. As for my aunt, the committed revolutionary party member, she remained faithful to Fidel until her bitter end. Her letters to relatives in the US were full of communist slogans. After over forty years of service, the now elderly woman wanted to visit her family in the US. Although she was healthy, the Cuban authorities insisted she go to the hospital for a check up before receiving permission to take the trip. She never made it out of the hospital to visit family. We later learned from a nurse, who had escaped from Cuba, that my aunt had been given a lethal injection in the hospital. Such was the Cuban government's final treatment of a loyal but now useless comrade.

Such barbarism can't happen here or can it? A former abortion clinic employee gave the following account. A baby was 35 weeks gestation when the abortion was performed. The baby came out and was moving. The abortionist took a utensil and stabbed the baby in the left ribcage. She twisted it until the baby stopped moving. At another abortion clinic in Florida, an African American baby girl was also born during the abortion. The baby was shoved into a bag and tossed on to the roof of the clinic. She died a slow horrible death gasping for air.

Despite Obama's denials and the media cover up, his record is clear. He fought any legal protections for babies born during an abortion. He also supports the gruesome procedure, partial birth abortion. This is from the one who claims to care for "the least of these".

Remembering the sorrowful history of the Cuban experience, teaches to watch for other red flags. A common one is the demonizing and silencing of any opposition as the Obama campaign has skillfully maneuvered. The flow of information is kept from the electorate as Obama has sealed all his records including his birth certificate. And when Obama calls for an "civilian national security force" as strong as the military, then watch out! He is dangerous and must be defeated by electing John McCain.

The Who really got it right.

"Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again."

Support Prop 8

to: La Mesa City Council

subject: support marriage prop 8

It is not often that as leaders in La Mesa, you have the opportunity to take a stand that makes a real difference for La Mesa families and children. You can do that as a council and vote to support Prop 8 – the affirmation of the traditional definition of marriage being between only one man and one woman.
It really is simple as voting for Mom, apple pie and the American way. Really, Prop 8 is just ABC
A - Accountability to hold off judicial tyranny of four judges who over ruled the over 61% of the California voters who voted for Prop 22. So we must do it again. This time a constitutional amendment so that four judges will not be able to redefine marriage into something unrecognizable that silences the vote of the people
B. stands for benefits. We hear very emotional appeals from opponent of Prop 8 that they just want the rights everyone else has. What is left out is the reality that with civil unions in California they already have all the benefits just not the name. Prop 8 will have no effect on civil unions. It will affirm in the Constitution that marriage is between one man and one woman as it has always been.
C. is for our children. Redefining marriage will by law lead to the teaching of same sex marriage to children as young as kindergarten disregarding parental wishes. This has already happened in Mass. As father who attempted to opt out his kindergartener, was arrested and told his parental rights ended as the school entrance. Recently, there is the example of the first graders field trip to a same sex wedding in San Francisco. Churches will face lawsuits to be forced to embrace that which is against their beliefs.
Lastly, this is not just another political, social issue. It is the foundational building block of stable societies, families and the best for our children. I urge you to rise up, stand up and speak out with one voice for Prop 8 – traditional marriage one man and one woman.
Please do what is best for La Mesa!

Response to Mayor Sanders Betrayal

East County CRA
subject: Protect Traditional Marriage & Prop 22

Thank you for taking the time to stand for traditional marriage, society, children and the vote of the people. We are here to make it loud and clear that they do not speak for us! We will not allow them to invalidate the meaning of marriage, our votes or our foundational family principles.
The powerful radical gay and lesbian special interest groups are very good in framing issues by twisting the language. It is not about civil rights. It is about the welfare of society, families and especially our children. One does not have the civil right to every whim or passing fancy. Anymore than a super model does not have the civil right to demand to be an NFL linebacker. A circus fat man does not have the civil right to demand to be a jockey in a hose race. They simply do not qualify physically. There’s a saying in Spanish that I think applies “Quieren tapar el sol con una mano” They wish to cover the sun with one hand – That can’t be done for long. It won’t be successful along as the common sense people step up and declare truth in all of our spheres of influence. Also, we must hold the politicians, candidates and judges accountable.

East County CRA President

Stand for the Vote of the People

to: San Diego city council members

subject: support marriage & prop 22

Good Afternoon City Council Members,

Although this is a vitally important issue, to stand for traditional marriage, the item before you has no place before this council. For the following reasons:
1. Prop 22, with over 61% majority, affirmed society’s time tested support of marriage between a man and a woman. You have no right or reason to disregard the will of the voters of California. You are elected to represent the people not to impose social experimentation upon them.
2. Since your voters have already decided this issue, why spend time revisiting this when you are plagued by multiple other city problems that remain unsettled.
3. Lastly, a vote today to involve yourselves in this item before the courts will not force the courts hand, but will be a slap to the face of your voters.
To members, Faulconer, Maienschein, Young and Fry, I thank you for voting against the City’s intrusion in an issue the people have already decided. To the rest of you, I ask that you reconsider and vote no this time. Remember, San Diego, thankfully, is not San Francisco or LA. Voters are overwhelmingly for what is best for society and children -traditional marriage. And the voters will remember your vote today.

Sylvia Sullivan

East County CRA President

For Alice

A humble servant has entered heaven’s door,

Alice demonstrated the joy and faith of the Lord and more,

A leader, teacher, warrior, tireless volunteer and more,

A patriot, she battled to uphold Christian principles and more,

An honor to call her friend, she will be missed and so much more.

Winning the War

Somewhere underneath the never ending news noise of the Iraq war, Pelosi coronation, global warming and the latest Trump- Rosie round, a realization is setting in.

Don’t look now but the pro – lifers are winning. Sure, Roe v Wade as “law” still stands for now. Additionally, the courts routinely over turn the voter’s will by dismissing laws that place even the slightest limits on abortion. However, pro-lifers are succeeding on the front that really counts – winning hearts and minds of the American people.

It is said that the young people are our future. According to survey after survey our future is becoming pro-life. For instance, a CBS/New York Times poll, found in 1993 just about half of women between ages of 18 and 29 said abortions should be available to anyone who wants it. Ten years later in 2003, the number of young women who felt that way, fell to 35 percent. Furthermore, the youngest group was more conservative than any other age group except for those women who were 65 and older.
This definite shift had Alexander Sanger, chairman of the International Planned Parenthood Council, remarking “I’ve seen the numbers and I find them unbelievably shocking.”
This trend continues as demonstrated in a more recent poll of 1000 high school seniors taken January 2006. The Hamilton College and Zogby International Youth Hot Button Issues Poll found that two-thirds of high school seniors said they believe abortion is always or usually “morally wrong”. Also, they learned that 70% of females and 67% of males would not consider abortion if they or their partner became pregnant in high school.

On another battle front, abortion clinics continue to close across the country. According to an October 10, 2006 report from Josh Montez of Family News in Focus, in the early 1990’s in America there were over 2000 abortion clinics. The number today is down to less than 750. In some cases a complete reversal has taken place when pro-life groups have re-opened the clinic as pro-life centers and memorials. This has happened in Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska.

According to the American Life League, Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain, clinic numbers are the lowest in twenty years. It has gone from 983 in 1987 to 817 clinics in 2006. They shut down the largest number, 18 express clinics, right here in the San Diego area.

The San Diego News Notes that has published lists of local abortionists for years also reported a major decline in their numbers. There were over 70 abortionists in the San Diego area in 1993 that figure is down to about 20 in the county in 2006.

These victories have come through prayer, tears, toil, education and a real love for Moms and babies. During these years of battles, the pro-choice side has been forced to
2.

defend the indefensible. Decent people cannot stomach partial birth abortion. They are horrified by Tiller, the baby killer, late term abortion practice. Tiller, Wichita’s, infamous late term abortionist, was recently exposed by Fox News, Bill O’Reilly, on “The O’Reilly Factor.”
O’Reilly could not contain his outrage as he said,” You know, I’ve been covering the news in America for 30 years and this Kansas situation is the worst thing I’ve ever seen… Americans cannot turn away from this; cannot ignore it.”

Momentum is slowly but ever so surely shifting to side of life. Yet it is a long way to victory. This war will continue to be waged in the streets, in the courts, the legislative bodies and at the polls. The nation remembers this Monday, January 22, marks the 34th anniversary of Roe v Wade. It is a sorrowful day to mourn the loss of over 47 million little lives. The progress made gives hope, determination to never, never give up. Literally the soul of America is at stake.

Imagine there’s no abortion
It’s easy if you try
That hell’s behind us
Ahead of us only life
Imagine all the children
Living from this day

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

(With apologies to John Lennon)

ToThe Editor

A kind of a hush has come upon the critics of the Grossmont High School Board in East County. Silenced are their dire predictions of doom, as the school board led by Jim Kelly, has provided sound fiscal leadership during a state inducedfiscal crisis.
Fiscal realities necessitated the board's wise choice to operate slightly in the red by drawing on the budget reserve money. By drawing on the budget reserve money the district was able to avoid any teacher layoffs, unlike many other districts in San Diego County. The board has kept campaign promises to supportour teachers and our children.
Under this school board leadership the voters passed the first bond measure inabout 40 years. This bond measure has enabled the district to begin long overdue reconstruction maintenance at our aging schools. If you go to any of our schools you will see varying degrees of construction as each school is updated for the 21st century communications as well as aging or non-existent air conditioning.
The board has hired a law firm that is an expert in the state education code in order to do a complete review of Grossmont’s own rules to bring them in line with the state codes. Any future problems the differences may have caused the district will be thus avoided.
Finally, the school board led by Mr. Kelly has begun several programs that each school is implementing. They ensure that all of our children are learning what they need to graduate. More importantly they become productive members of our community upon graduation.
One of the programs teams teachers in each department at a school in order to coordinate subject matter and requirements. Then all students are evaluated on the same material.
Another program targets students at risk of dropping out. These students are identified and then receive special attention. The student dropout rate dropped by 50% the first year this was implemented.
The disturbing distractions are history as most board votes are 5-0. The few split votes show diversity of opinion not a rubber stamping, marching in lockstep board. Students' education, parental involvement and teachers support are the priority.
Let us continue the hum of excellent efficiency and re elect JimKelly. Sound educational and fiscal leadership in Grossmont Union High School
District has lowered the volume of the critics to a whisper. Vote for Jim Kelly on November 7!

Lost And Found

Chapters

I. Am I dead or am I alive? Or am I somewhere in between? I can’t move. Darkness is all I see. Nothingness and pain totally engulf me.” Lisa’s muddled mind was as confused as her mini van was mangled up against a thick oak tree trunk.
Through the pouring rain, suddenly a distant voice shouted. “Here she is, she‘s still breathing. Frank, get the paramedics over here!
Lisa McConnell’s day in October of 1986 had started off as routine. An early riser, Lisa was up this Saturday while her husband of seven years, Mark and her five year old daughter Sara slept in.
She quietly dressed into her comfortable sweats, before gently kissing Mark good-bye. Softly she said, “I’ll pick us up something special for breakfast this morning.” She peeked in on little Sara, who was peacefully sleeping clutching her favorite teddy bear, Brownie.
She tip-toed away grabbing her keys and handbag as she stepped outside their fashionable Normal Heights bungalow.
Outside there was a cool wind blowing and the rain was steadily falling on this gray morning. She drove away in her dark blue mini van. She thought such storms unusual for Southern California, of course, that’s why many locals can’t drive in it.
This morning her mind wandered from thinking about Sara’s school project, to her own 3rd grade students papers she needed to correct this weekend. She thought of her handsome Mark and his possible promotion at the law firm.
As she rounded a curve suddenly there was an oncoming old pick-up truck in her lane. Lisa tried to swerve to the right to avoid the collision. In seconds her van was on the shoulder and off the road. She lost control and it careened head on into a very large oak tree.

Mark’s usual cool demeanor was rattled as he heard the words on the phone, “Mr. McConnell your wife has been in a serious accident you need to come to Mercy Hospital Emergency room right away.”
Mark immediately arranged for Sara to stay with friends, Mary and Jack Thompson next door.

“Daddy what’s going on? And where is Mommy?” intense looking Sara inquired.
“Sara sweetie, Daddy has to go now but I’ll be back soon. You know we love you. Everything will be ok. You be good for Mr. & Mrs. Thompson.” He hugged and kissed her little sweet face with those dark eyes so much like Lisa’s.
Mark and Lisa had met while he was finishing up law school. They had a blind date arranged by Linda. Linda, Lisa’s divorced sister, had known Mark through an old boyfriend, Bill, in college. Mark had been impressed with her energetic and gentle spirit as well as her attractive good looks. Lisa found Mark’s confident, logical mind and tall, blond hair, green eyes looks very appealing. These qualities made him well suited for climbing the legal corporate ladder at the firm of Harvey & Lewis.

.
II. Lisa Lives?

Mark rushed into the hospital emergency room and spoke to the nurse. “I’m Mark McConnell, where is my wife, Lisa? I must see her.”
“Mr. McConnell, Lisa is in surgery now. I’ll show you where you can wait for the doctor when he is finished”, with calm efficiency, the nurse, Jill Martin responded. She was well trained to control her emotions even when the patient was a friend.
“Please, please tell me how is she and is she going to be alright?” pleaded Mark.
“Mr. McConnell, all I can tell you is she is in critical condition right now. You’ll have to wait for the doctor for anymore than that.” The nurse said, as she determined to check on Lisa’s condition for herself.

Mark paced back and forth in the waiting room as the clock ticked on at a snail’s pace. The hospital buzz and busyness was a background blur that his mind did not comprehend as thoughts of Lisa consumed his total attention. His emotions roller coasted from one minute hope. These were the best doctors. The next minute he was despairing at the thought of losing Lisa forever.
The fear, anger, anguish cycles twisted his insides and left him weak and numb. He thought of praying. Lisa seemed to find some sort of meaning and comfort in it. Her spiritual experience had begun a couple of years ago when she attended Mary Thompson’s Bible study and prayer group next door. To Mark, prayer appeared to be for those weak souls who couldn’t quite make it without help.
Silently he began, “God if you are there, Lisa needs you now. You know, I’m not one to have much faith but Lisa believes in you. Can you please help her if you hear me? Please let her make it. We need her.”
As if half expecting some sort of audible response, but hearing, feeling nothing, Mark felt foolish at his attempt. He hoped God would help because of Lisa’s belief in Him.
The doors swung open and Linda came in and ran to him. In tears, she clung to him asking, “How is she? What happened? Why didn’t you call me sooner?”
He was about to answer, when Dr. Tom Spencer walked in. Dr. Spencer a short chunky muscular man wore glasses that emphasized his kind eyes. Tonight he had a very serious and tired countenance. He said, “Mr. McConnell, I’m Dr. Spencer.”

“Yes, doctor, this is Lisa’s sister, Linda. Please tell me how is she?” Mark asked.
“She’s made it through the surgery. The next 48 hours will be an indicator of how successful the surgery was. She has sustained considerable trauma to the brain. At this point we don’t know to what extent and how much long term damage, if any. She is in a coma to help contain the swelling of the brain.” Dr. Spencer explained.
“May I please see her?” Mark implored.
“Yes, you can each go in but not for long, she been through a lot.” said Dr. Spencer.
Mark was quite unprepared for what he encountered in Lisa’s ICU room. There were tubes; IVs connected everywhere as well as several monitors making various sounds. Despite the bandages, cuts, some swelling, he noticed her face was surprisingly serene looking.
Tenderly, he kissed her cheek and held her hand as he spoke words from his heart. “Lisa, I’m here for you. I love you and I’ll do everything I can to help you get well. Sara and I miss you so much. She’ll be coming to see you when you are moved out of ICU. Linda’s outside, she wants to see you next.”
For the next month, Mark’s life was full of hospitals sights, sounds and smells. Lisa’s immediate life threatening conditions passed. Sara was coping as best as could be expected for a five year old. She would visit her Mommy, bringing her latest art work or daisy’s she had picked. Mark was grateful for Linda’s help with Sara. She assisted Sara in completing her school project. Mark was able to take some leave time from the firm but had already been notified that he must return soon due to several of his pending cases.
Today he had received a call from Dr. Spencer who wanted to meet with Mark to discuss Lisa’s future care.
When they were seated in Dr. Spencer’s office, he began solemnly saying, “Mark, I must be frank with you regarding Lisa’s future. As I stated before there is much we don’t know about the brain and how, when or if such damage can be remedied. Lisa has not come out of the coma. You must face the fact that she may never do so. We do know the longer a patient remains in a coma, the less likely it is that they will recover. Our hospital has done all that we can. Her needs are now better serve by rehabilitative nursing care facility. I can recommend one and all the arrangement can then be made for her transfer.”

Reeling from such devastating news, Mark was silent. He thought is this really happening? Then he asked, “Can’t you give her anything? Or can’t you operate or use an experimental measure with my permission? Surely there must be another doctor who is an expert in these cases that could help. Are you actually saying she may never wake up from this coma?”
With sad eyes Dr Spencer replied, “I’m sorry Mark. There is nothing more I can do. Of course you are free to seek a second opinion, but in these cases very rarely do the patients recover. Again, I’m sorry; if you need the names of recommended facilities just let me know.”
At that a forlorn Mark went home to Sara and Linda who was with her. He composed himself to give the news. It was a tearful night at the McConnell home.

III. Life Goes On

It has been nearly twenty years since Lisa’s accident. Mark did heed the advice of Dr. Spencer and had Lisa transferred to a first rate nursing facility called Green Valley Rehabilitative Care. Linda moved in the Normal Heights home to assist with Sara.
Mark eventually got the promotion. He is now a partner at the successful firm of Harvey, Lewis & McConnell. Linda took some paralegal courses and also works at the firm.
Sara graduated with her degree in Education. She married Brad who runs his family insurance agency.
The family is still trying to learn how to live with Lisa in a coma. They visit her often although not as frequent as in the beginning. Mark or sometimes Sara will come by and take Lisa in her reclining bed on wheels outside for some sun in the gardens at Green Valley.
They have engaged the services of a nurse, Jill Martin who retired from Mercy hospital ten years ago. She provides private nurse care to a few patients. Nurse Martin specializes in the care of patients like Lisa and has always appreciated Lisa and her family. She often reads to Lisa from the book of Psalms. Mark had said they were Lisa’s favorite Scriptures. Lately she has noticed certain things about Lisa that may indicate more brain activity than previously noted.
Dutifully she reports this to Lisa’s doctor, Dr. Bruce Spencer, who took over his father’s practice when Dr. Tom Spencer had a heart attack and passed away.
After performing some tests on Lisa, Dr. Spencer has called to meet with Mark in his office at Green Valley.
“Dr. Spencer, what is going on with Lisa? Is something wrong?” inquires Mark as they are seated in Dr Spencer’s consultation room.
“Mark, after testing Lisa’s brain function, we have reason to believe that there is a noticeable increase in the level of activity. This is not to get your hopes up. She is still in a coma. However, in some rare cases the brain goes through a very slow process of growing new connections to heal the injured parts. So in other words the brain may seek out new pathways to re-establish working connections in order to make up for those lost because of damage.” Dr Spence explained.

Mark could scarcely take it all in. “Are you saying she may come out of the coma after all this time? I thought there was nothing that could be done? That’s what Dr. Tom clearly said.” Mark said trying to keep calm.
“I know this is confusing, Mark. This is not 1986 anymore. That was nearly twenty years ago and medical science is always developing and progressing. I have a colleague of mine, Dr. Thornton who has being doing the latest research in this area of brain self repair using stem cells. He is familiar with Lisa’s case and would like to do further tests to see if his research could help her.” Dr. Spencer further explained.

“Stem cells research? Isn’t that a very controversial field of study?” questioned Mark raising his voice in the discussion.
“Mark, there are different types of stem cells. There are the embryonic stem cells which are very controversial because a life is destroyed. But I’m talking about adult stem cells. Which are the ones that have actually shown real promise in helping heal patients and no life is destroyed. However, stem cells are still at the experimental stage so you will have to decide what is best for Lisa. I understand this is new to you and all a bit of a shock, too. Perhaps you should take a few days to discuss it with the family and think about it” Said Dr. Spencer in such a caring manner that Mark agreed and left but not before popping to check on Lisa.
Mark greeted Jill as he went in to see Lisa. Jill had been reading to her as was customary in the afternoon.
“How has Lisa been doing today? Mark asked.
Jill cautiously said, “She has been just fine. I really feel as if she hears me when I read certain Palms of comfort to her. A smile nearly comes out across her face. She seems pleased when you, Sara, Linda or Mary Thompson come for a visit.”
“Hi honey, so good to see you today. Nurse Jill tells me you been enjoying several visitors. That’s just great. I’ve got to go now but I’ll be back soon. And Sara and Brad told me to tell you they will be here to see you next week on Saturday. Love you, Bye.” Mark said softly as he kissed Lisa on the cheek.

IV. The Awakening
After a few days, Mark is again meeting with Dr. Spencer and this time Dr Thornton is also joining them.
“I’m so pleased that you have decided allow Lisa to participate in our research study program. We are very hopeful that the results could greatly improve the quality of life for Lisa.” Dr Thornton affirmed in his friendly manner not usually associated with a researcher. He was tall, slender, glasses and had a receding hairline. His social skills came from his several years as a public relations volunteer in this new field of study.
“So unless you have any more questions, Mark, Dr Thornton wanted to start next week with Lisa’s treatments.” Dr Spencer said.
“How soon should we see results in Lisa’s case?” Mark asked.
Dr. Thornton explained, “That really does vary, each case is different depending on the area of the brain affected and the individuals normal response to the treatment.”
“Next week is fine with me, but I want to be the one to tell her first, if you don’t mind. I know it is uncertain how much she actually hears but we don’t know for sure she is totally unaware.” Mark requested.
Both Doctors nodded in agreement as Mark headed towards Lisa’s room.
Then Dr. Thornton questioned Dr. Spencer, “Did you advise Mark about the possible side effects of these treatments? “
“I saw no need to trouble him with such details. His options are so limited. This is only Lisa’s chance for recovery. He wants to do anything that could possibly help,” replied Dr. Spencer.

Trapped inside her body unable to move, speak or respond, Lisa has some stirrings of consciousness. This is soon followed by her lament of her circumstance:
“I’m so confused about what has happened to me. I try so hard to move or speak or anything to let Jill know I’m here! Please recognize it and help me. I know I feel nothing. Oh, I know that Psalm she’s reading. May God grant comfort and peace in my desolation.”
Outwardly, Lisa lays there listening to Jill read to her Psalm 142.

“I cry aloud with my voice to the LORD;
I make supplication with my voice to the LORD.
I pour out my complaint before Him;
I declare my trouble before Him.
When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
Thou didst know my path.
In the way where I walk
They have hidden a trap for me.
Look to the right and see;
For there is no one who regards me;
There is no escape for me;
No one cares for my soul.
I cried out to Thee, O Lord;
I said, “Thou art my refuge,
My portion in the land of the living.
Give heed to my cry,
For I am brought very low;
Deliver me from my persecutors,
For they are too strong for me.
Bring my soul out of prison,
So that I may give thanks to Thy name;
The righteous will surround me,
For thou wilt deal bountifully with me.”

Weeks after her treatments have begun; Lisa begins to ever so slowly regain consciousness. Jill is startled to see Lisa eyes open and follow her around the room!
Excitedly Jill calls Dr. Spencer to the room. He examines her and finds her levels of brain activity and responsiveness to have greatly increased.

He calls Mark and also notifies Dr. Thornton of Lisa’s progress.
Mark, full of anticipation, arrives quickly to see Lisa. He is first met by Dr Spencer.
“Before you go in to see Lisa, I must entreat you to above all - take it slowly with her. Her progress so far is better than we had dared hope. However, too much sudden information in finding her way back to the land of the living could do psychological harm, causing her to retreat into her own world. As is to be expected, she is very emotionally fragile”, explained Dr. Spencer.
Mark answered, “Of course, I understand. There is so much she has missed that it will require a slow unfolding as she is ready to know and understand our lives.”

V. The Reality Slap

Before entering Lisa’s room, Jill the nurse, pulls Mark aside and quietly but firmly asks him. “I know that Dr. Spencer has already discussed with you the care that must be taken in speaking with Lisa. However, you must tell her about Luke. She may have flashes of memories that make no sense to her. It would be better if she had it carefully explained to her by you not by some jolting revelation.”

Annoyed by her insistence, Mark remarked, “Yes, yes, I am well aware that she must be told. I know you two have remained close friends. And I have appreciated the great care you given Lisa throughout the years. Please let handle me our affairs in our own time.”
Not backing down, Jill responded, “Interesting choice of words, Mark, it’s not your affair we were discussing. Lisa has always been a good friend to me. When my little Pattie was in her 3rd grade class, Lisa was the teacher who took the time to help Pattie. Pattie was so devastated when her Daddy just up and left us one day. Lisa helped get her through that difficult time. I’ll never forget it. Today my Pattie, as you’ll recall, is a journalist for the San Diego Gazette. Lisa must be told about Luke!” Having had her say, she left to answer a patient call signal.

The mention of Luke’s name brought back the memory of the day of the accident. Lisa’s injuries had been further complicated by her pregnancy. Dr. Spencer and Dr. Phillips (her OB doctor) had worked so hard to save Luke’s life without jeopardizing Lisa’s. Luke was born three weeks premature, but was remarkably resilient. Mark, along with Linda’s help had tried their best to raise him and Sara. Mark had to be away working long hours. He always felt partly responsible for Luke’s problems.
Luke had inherited Mark’s green eyes and golden blond hair. That along with his trim build and friendly personality had caught the eye of his English teacher in High School. Mr. Lenny Fox encouraged Luke to get involved in the school play.
Fox used the time he spent with Luke at rehearsals to get close to him. It angered Mark that he had just not
seen it! How could he have missed it? Luke was at a vulnerable age. He had never known his real Mom.
Linda, too self absorbed, was not able to be more than an Aunt to him. Luke had sexual identity questions. He was told in his classroom that a good percentage of the students were gay or bi-sexual. Fox recruited Luke into the homosexual life style while he molested him. The truth was revealed during an investigation of another student of Fox, who committed suicide after being molested by Fox. It was Mark’s law firm that assisted on the case. They helped get the conviction and Fox was sentenced to twenty years.
He would have to move cautiously in how he told Lisa about Luke.
As Mark stepped into Lisa’s room, he noticed how very peaceful it was. There were colorful flowers and various get well cards all around the room. He could hear faint hymns from music CD’s playing.
Lisa was in a matching pink silk gown and robe. Her hair had been washed and brushed. She had on just a touch of make up. He had to hand it to Jill, she really had Lisa all dolled up. Most of her IV’s, tubes and monitors were gone.
Lisa looked at Mark.
A joyful look came upon her face as she smiled slightly and haltingly said, “Mark, oh, Mark”
Mark rushed to her and hugged and kissed her saying, “Lisa, Lisa, you’ve come back to me! Oh, Lisa how I’ve missed you all this time. I can’t believe this, this miracle!”
The encounter was sweet as he held her for a long time. Then he began to tell her about some of things that had happened. There was so very much to tell. He spoke in general terms about Sara, Linda and then Luke.
He let her know the good news about how their baby had survived. Lisa although thrilled, was beginning to tire. Mark observed it and said,” Darling, I’m going to let you rest now. I know you want to see everybody and they will come for a visit. We must not wear you out. You’ve come such a long way; we’ll take it slowly one day at a time.” And with a kiss he left to give everyone the news.

The following Saturday, they all gathered at Green Valley in Dr. Spencer’s comfortable conference room. Mark had alerted everyone of Lisa’s progress. Sara and Brad, Linda and Mary Thompson were all present.
Dr. Spencer privately asked Mark, “Do you really want Mary Thompson here. This was to be for family members only.”

Mark answered, “Yes, Bruce, Mary stays. She is one of Lisa’s closest friends. Your past case has no bearing now.”

They were waiting for Luke to show up.
“He’s usually late, but he promised to make a real effort to join us on time,” explained Sara, his sister
“I just saw him in the hallway, he won’t be a minute,” said Mary Thompson. Mary had befriended Luke when he was dealing with the Fox trial. She introduced him to Exodus International; a ministry that assists individuals in leaving the homosexual life about three years ago. Luke was now dating Tina, Mary’s daughter that Luke had always admired.

When Luke joined the group, Dr Spencer began by saying, “By now you’ve all heard the news about Lisa’s remarkable progress. I’ve asked you here to go over the guidelines regarding your visits with Lisa. None of us want to say or do anything that would hinder her recovery. How much she’ll be able to recover is still an unknown as these treatments are experimental. Every precaution must be taken to prevent any set back whether physically or psychologically. First and foremost, the visits are to be kept short. She is still in a weaken state and tires easily. Secondly, you should not shock her with disclosures of events or people that might be upsetting to her. We’ve arranged for the nurse to be in the next room watching the monitors for any signs of distress. Should this occur the visit would be immediately terminated. Lastly, Mark has agreed to be in the room initially to reintroduce you to Lisa. This should make the visits run more smoothly.”

It was decided that Sara would go in first to see her mother. She and Mark walked over to Lisa’s room.
The nurse, Jill was in place in the office next door.
Mark opened the door gently. He and Sara stepped inside. The soft music was playing. Lisa was looking out the large window at the lush gardens.
Mark greeted her, “Hi honey, I’m back and brought with me someone very special that couldn’t wait any longer to see you. Lisa, this is our Sara, all grown up now. She is as smart as she is lovely. Sara takes after her Mom, I would say.”
Lisa’s face lit up with joy at the sight of Mark and Sara. Then she said, “Sara, little Sara”
Sara who at first had hesitated, now rushed to her mother’s bedside and hugged her saying, “Oh Mom, how I’ve missed you. I love you, Mom.”
As the tears began to flow, Mark quietly slipped out of the room leaving them time to share together.
Sara was much like her mother. She had a good natured and energetic personality. Her slim build, brown hair and dark eyes resembled a younger version of Lisa.

Sara began, “Mom there is so very much to tell you. I can’t believe I’m talking to you and you are really here now. I’m married to a wonderful man – Brad Olson. I’ll bring him in at our next visit. He and his family have an insurance agency that he runs. The wedding was so beautiful. How I wished you could have been there. Aunt Linda helped me put it all together. You know Aunt Linda, everything must look perfect.
And guess what Mom, I’m a teacher, like you. I even teach at the same school – Harris Elementary. I teach 2nd grade and just love it. You know Mom that the school has a mounted glass case display which honors those who have contributed to children’s education. There is a plaque posted that honors you! An accomplished teacher the students and parents loved. Several of the students have gone on to university and successful careers. They give you credit as a teacher who inspired them to achieve. You are a hard act to follow.”
Thoughts of teaching and her students raced through Lisa’s mind. It was hard to recall specifics, yet the scenes of classrooms and little faces flowed. She loved the children and they knew it. Speaking of children she inquired of Sara, “Any children?” She still struggled to get the words out and use her voice.
The question took Sara by surprise. She managed to recover by shaking her head and saying, “None yet, I think I should leave now. I don’t want Jill coming here to throw me out for sapping all your strength.”
She kissed her Mom good -bye and quickly took refuge in the nearest ladies room. There nothing that could stop her tears now. At least her mother had been spared the truth.
About five years ago, Sara had just started going out with Brad. She was still in college when she learned she was pregnant. There was no one close she could talk to except for Linda. Sara believed she would lose Brad if he knew. And of course there was her degree. Thoughts of graduation would go down the drain if she had a baby. Sara felt in no way ready to become a Mom. How she wished her Mom had been around to counsel her. Her Dad was always away working. Sara was not really sure he would have been much comfort to her, either.
Linda was not the kindest person, but Sara had not been prepared for Linda’s cold response. It was all so very clear and simple to her. Linda said she had had an abortion years ago and it was like having a tonsil removed. Sara had made a stupid mistake that threaten her future. Linda was angry. She wanted Mark free of family problems so he could focus on getting with his own life.
No, a pregnancy, a baby did not fit in Linda’s plans for Mark and Sara. Sara must agree to get rid of it.
Get rid of the problem and then everything would be just fine. Sara noticed that Linda never referred to a baby. She always called it the “problem” or just “it”. Linda drove her to the clinic. It was an ugly, nasty place run by a cold staff. Linda and the staff person, Charlotte, assured her it was no big deal. One relatively quick procedure, some pain, some bleeding and poof –problem solved.
Sara sadly learned she had traded one problem for a tremendous amount of guilt, shame and pain. Thoughts of her baby, a girl she later learned, haunted her. Not only that, but as a result of an infection from the abortion, Sara was infertile. Brad knew nothing about it. It was her dirty secret burden to carry.
She was really crying now, when she felt a touch of a gentle hand on her shoulder. As she turned around, Sara saw it was Mary Thompson. Sara had not even heard her come into the Ladies Room.
Mary’s kind and caring manner helped to calm Sara as she asked, “Sara, may I please pray for you?”
Sara nodded yes. Mary prayed for Sara, Brad, the baby, Mark, Lisa and Luke.
Mary talked on about God’s love and forgiveness. She explained His wondrous gift of love, healing and salvation. She told Sara how she too, could find healing and forgiveness.
At the moment, Sara prayed, she felt such a rush of love and peace like she had never known before.
Sara left Green Valley feeling like a new person. Mary would proclaim Sara was a new creation.

Sunday afternoon was set for Linda to visit Lisa. Linda was tall, slender with shoulder length flowing hair and perfect features. She always dressed in style with her make up and hair just right. Today, she wore a beige linen suit with shoes, bag and jewelry to match. She was known as the more glamorous of the two sisters. Her stunning looks had opened doors for her during her younger years. Her relationship with Lisa had always been rocky.
It had not helped that Linda had the habit of swooping in and snatching away Lisa’s boyfriends. This had happened several occasions even into their adult years. Linda wondered if Lisa would recall their last conversation before the accident. They had exchanged heated words over Lisa’s concerns that Linda had eyes for Mark for quite sometime.
Linda thought, “Well, perhaps, sister that may have been true. You have not been around to take care of Mark all these years. Men need a friend,” she smiled to herself.

As Linda arrived at Green Valley, Dr. Spencer greeted her and said, “You can just go in to see Lisa. Mark is already there. Please remember to observe the visitor guidelines discussed yesterday.”
“Of course, Dr. Spencer,” Linda said smiling at him.
“Knock, knock,”said Linda as she came into the room.
Mark was seated next to Lisa who was propped up on the bed.
“Darling, your sister, Linda, is here to see you. You know Lisa, Linda has been such a big help to me while you been away. Linda assisted me finding the nanny for Sara and Luke and well as the housekeeper. She was a life saver when it came to Sara’s wedding as Sara probably told you. Today, we are letting Lisa use a computer to type her answers and save her energy during the visits. I leave you two, now,” Mark said as he kissed Lisa bye and left.
At first the two sisters just stared at each other. Then Lisa said, “Linda, Linda my little sister”
With that Linda came close to Lisa. She hugged her and they wept.
Lisa pointed to her keyboard to use during the visit.
Linda responded, “Please use what ever is easiest for you. I’m sure you have many questions since so much time has passed.”
Lisa typed, “I do remember and I’m sorry for our fight.”
“Don’t worry about it, it’s all forgotten it was so long ago,” answered Linda.
Still trying to be the goody two shoes, Linda thought to herself. As Lisa typed on, Linda looked around. She thought, “This place is not too shabby. Lisa you’ve gotten plenty of cards, flowers, and sympathy. You’ve got two great kids and a handsome well- to- do husband. Not bad for one who can’t get out of bed for nearly twenty years.
Lisa typed, “Thanks for helping out with the kids and Mark. You look good as always. How are you? I still pray for you.”
Linda could longer contain herself as she began to counter Lisa, “There you go again, Lisa with that religious stuff. You know, I still don’t believe any of it. I’m baffled how you still believe. Look at what has happened to you. Where has God been these last twenty years, while you lay in a coma?
And to think I wanted your life. That’s right, I wanted Mark for me and the, oh so perfect life you guys had with perfect children. Well, your God did a number on me. I got breast cancer and had to have a breast removed. I’m not so pretty any more. Mark is no longer interested.”
Linda then began to cry.
Lisa said, “I’m so sorry.”
She continued typing her response to Linda, “God has been with me through every step of the way. I don’t know why this happened; only He knows. He loves you too, Linda. Please find some time to go to Mary’s Bible study. The ladies there will pray for you. We are not perfect and we know it, just forgiven”
Linda read what Lisa wrote through tear filled eyes and felt the kind of love and peace she longed for.
Linda hugged and kissed her sister and whispered, “Thank you, for being a good sister despite me. I will try out the Bible study.”
Nurse Jill came in and said, “Visiting hours are over now, Linda, you can come back another day. Bye now”

Monday morning Mary prayed during her devotions for wisdom in encouraging her friend Lisa, she was to visit later today. Especially, she gave thanks for the progress in Lisa’s recovery. She was thankful she had been able to comfort Sara. She also thought of Linda, she had often invited Linda to her ladies Bible study. Linda was never interested. Mary was hopeful that would change someday. Mary finished arranging the red, yellow and purple tulips from her garden to take to Lisa. She locked up her home and drove off the Green Valley.

When Mary arrived, Mark was in the hallway ready to go in to visit Lisa.
“Hi Mary, please come on in,” Mark welcomed Mary as they went into the room.
Mark greeted Lisa with a hug and kiss saying, “Hi Lisa, it’s so good to see you today. I’ve brought you one of your favorite friends to visit – Mary our friend and next door neighbor. Mary has been such a great help to us over these difficult years.”
“Let me give you a hug, Lisa. Here I brought you some beautiful tulips from my garden for you
It’s so good to see how well you are doing.” Mary said as she hugged Lisa and sat near her.
Lisa said slowly, “Mary it’s so good to see you, too.”
As Mark was leaving he explained to Mary, “Lisa is typing her answers in the computer during the visits to save her strength.”
Lisa then wrote to Mary, “Thank you for your help with Sara and Luke. Sara has grown into such a lovely young woman. Mark is bringing Luke tomorrow, I can’t wait to see him.
So much time has passed I can’t believe, it’s me when I look in the mirror. I’ve prayed for strength to deal with the regrets of so much I’ve missed. Yet, I‘m reminded there is so much to be thankful for such as being here at all. By the way, how are Jack and Tina?”
Mary replied, “Lisa, you look as lovely and sweet as ever. You have a wonderful daughter. She’s married such an excellent young man. And as for Luke, I’ll be honest; he has had some difficult times. When he comes please don’t be put off by his appearance. He has long hair, earring and tattoos on the outside, like the style of so many young men today. On the inside, he has a real heart of gold. I’ve gotten to know him
better since his been dating Tina. Tina is still singing in church and pursuing her career in music.
Lisa smiled at the thought of her Luke and Mary’s Tina dating. It seemed just seemed right; the families had always had a special connection.
“And, Jack, how is he? inquired Lisa.
Mary took a deep breath and began recounting what had happened to Jack.
“About ten years ago, Jack began to have trouble with high blood pressure and cholesterol. He went to see Dr. Bruce Spencer for treatment. With diet changes and exercise, the blood pressure came down to normal levels. His cholesterol was still high. Dr. Spencer prescribed some new medications to Jack. He never disclosed to us the possible side-effects and the warning signs of problems with Jack’s reaction to the medication. In any case, he developed serious problem and died from liver complications a short time afterwards.”
Mary wiped away a tear and continued, “There was an investigation when it was discovered that several of his patients had similar problems. The investigation focused on Dr. Spencer’s connections with certain drug companies. The medical board reviewed it and there was a trial. Mark successfully defended Dr. Spencer.
In the aftermath, Dr. Spencer left Mercy Hospital and came here to Green Valley. The whole matter was so disturbing that many believe it caused the heart attack the killed his father, Dr. Tom Spencer.
I don’t blame Mark for the outcome. It was at a time when the finances were tight for Mark and the family. After all with kids and medical expenses, the bills can really stack up. You know of course, the driver of the pick-up truck that caused your accident was an illegal. He had no insurance and no money.
Only my faith and prayers of many have helped me move on and focus on serving others. I believe that’s God’s plan for me. He has a special plan for you, too. I’m sure of it. I talked enough now and must let you get your rest.”
So with a hug and kiss to Lisa, who whispered, “Please come back soon.” Then Mary left.

Lisa was left with a myriad of thoughts swirling around in her head. She had so many unanswered questions. What really had gone on between Mark and Linda? What difficult experiences had Luke troubled? What about Sara, who seemed almost too good to be true. Lisa thought she had seen just a touch of sadness in her eyes. And dear sweet Mary, she had been through so much, yet was so caring and strong.
The history of Dr. Spencer also concerned her, but only for a moment. After all he had helped her come so far in her recovery.

Jill came in and declared, “Lisa, you’ve had such a busy day. It’s time for you to get some rest. You must be ready for tomorrow when Mark is bringing Luke.
There will be time tomorrow for her questions. As Lisa drifted off to sleep, she dreamed of seeing her baby, Luke.

The next morning, the door to Lisa room opened and in walked Mark and Luke. Lisa’s heart skipped a beat as she gazed lovingly at both of them. Mary was right about Luke. His hair was long and he did have a silver hoop earring. A tattoo, Lisa could not identify, was visible under his short sleeved shirt at times when his arm moved. He had a charming smile much like his father.
“Lisa, this is your son, Luke, who’s come to visit you today.” Mark said.
Luke moved next to his mother and hugged and kissed her gently. He said, “At last, you’re back Mom. I’ve missed you so much.”
Lisa said, tearing up from the joy, “Luke, my baby, is so grown up. I love you.”
Lisa then proceeded to type out, “Luke tell me, what do you do? Are you in school? Mary told me about you and Tina. Is it serious? I’m so happy to see you and for you two!”
“Whoa, Mom, not so fast. One thing at a time. Right now I manage a restaurant downtown. In the mornings I take classes studying business management. As far as Tina is concerned, only time will tell. We have a lot of fun together.” Luke said as he laughed.
After Mark and Luke left, Lisa was really exhausted. She buzzed her nurse, Jill. She let Jill know she wanted to get a good night’s rest. In the morning she would need Jill’s for a special project.

VI. The Retreat

Three days later, Mark received a call from Jill. She was alarmed that perhaps Lisa was slipping away again. The past couple of days she just wasn’t as alert and aware as before.
As Mark arrived at Green Valley, he met Jill who gave him an envelope.
“Lisa wanted you to have this just in case anything were to happen to her again.” Explained Jill.
“What has happened to her?” Mark demanded to know.
Jill replied, “Nothing more than what I’ve already explained. She is having a few tests done right now. You should wait awhile till the tests are completed before going in to see her.”

Alone in the back of the Chapel, Mark fumbled open the envelope and began reading Lisa’s letter.
She wrote, “My Darling Mark,
I write this as I have no idea whether or not I would get the chance to say these things to you in case something were to go wrong for me.
First of all, I love you, Mark and always have. The past few years have been incredibly challenging for both of us.
When I awoke, I had no idea of how much my world had radically changed. You have succeeded so greatly in your career. I’m proud of your accomplishments. You’ve done the best you could with Sara and Luke. They are fine young people.
Yet, there has been a great cost due to my absence as well as your work schedule .My heart aches and is broken as I think about what happened to Luke as a teenager. Please don’t be angry with Jill. She told me because it was a highly publicized case and she feared I would learn of it on the news, etc. She also overheard a conversation in the ladies room between Sara and Mary. It pains me so much not to have been able to help Sara when she was in trouble. Mark, we have a granddaughter in heaven.
I have forgiven Linda and you for what happened between you.
My faith is tested and my life is but shell of what it was before. I pray for the strength to go on.
Love,
Lisa

Utterly broken by Lisa’s revelations, Mark realizes how much he does love her. So he turns to prayer again. Silently, he prays, “God, here I am again. You helped Lisa before and gave her back to us. Please don’t take her away. Don’t let her quit on us. We, I need her and love her. We can’t lose her again”
This time deep within his soul, he feels surrounded by a love and peace like none other. He is calm now and goes to find Lisa.

The next evening Dr. Thornton has summoned Lisa’s family and close friends to Green Valley.
Around the table in the conference room are Jill, Mark, Sara and Brad, Luke and Tina, Linda and Mary.
Dr Thornton begins, “I have asked you all here because I have some disturbing news.”
Everyone gasps.
“No, it’s not about Lisa; she is coming along well, now that we have her back on the right track. Dr Spencer has been arrested and charged with patient endangerment along with taking kickbacks from the Martell Drug Company.”
They gasp again.
Dr. Thornton continues, “Dr. Spencer has been under suspicion for a long time. So with the help of nurse, Jill, we were able to gather the evidence against him. In Lisa’s case, Jill alerted me and the authorities when Lisa started to slowly fade again. I discovered that he had switched her medications to those which were unauthorized from Martell. Their testing had not been completed nor were they yet approved for patient usage. Spencer along with Martell’s director, believed that if successful, great profits would be gained in such a high profile case as Lisa’s.“
Mark was the first to recover and speak, “I find this hard to believe. I’m so grateful for you and Jill in how you’ve protected and helped Lisa. I can tell you this time I will not be representing Dr. Spencer.”
Still in shock, they all go to check on Lisa.
Jill let’s them know, “She had a tiring day of tests and changes in her treatment. She is asleep now, but you may quietly peek in on her. Please do not wake her.”
Mark, Sara and Luke agree to be the ones who stop in and silently bid Lisa goodnight.

VII. Restoration

A couple of months later on a sunny Sunday afternoon there is a special gathering in the garden at Green Valley. Lisa has been wheeled out to the sitting area surrounded by fragrant roses to join with family and friends. As usual, Jill has helped Lisa look her best. Today she is radiant. Mark is beside her as he holds her hand.
Sara and Brad are seated across from them. They are engaged in a lively discussion with Linda and Bill. Linda is dating Bill again. They are talking about Linda’s new condo she recently purchased.
Dr. Thornton arrives arm in arm with Jill and Mary. He greets everyone and asks, “So how is my number one patient today?”
Lisa smiles and Mark answers” Great, just great.
Luke and Tina come in. Tina is glowing. Luke is bursting with the news. “Mom, Dad and everyone, I have an announcement. We are engaged!”
The group erupts with joyous laughter and congratulations.

Give Liberty A Chance

to: San Diego City Council Members

subject: Saving Mt Soledad Memorial Cross as is, Where IT IS

This City and you as elected leaders are truly at a crossroad.
Before deciding how to vote you must be clear as to what is happening before you. This is blatant anti -Christian bigotry and an attack on our freedoms. My parents came legally from Cuba, an island prison without liberty. So I recognize such attacks all too well.
The atheists and ACLU attorney’s true motives have been exposed. At first they said the cross is illegal on public land, with public funds and in need of a super majority vote. The people have done it all – put the cross in private hands and with private funds and voted with over 76% to keep the cross... Yet the atheist and ACLU attorneys have fought every attempt to resolve the issue. They stand for one thing - the removal of this cross from public view. That is a direct attack on our Constitutional freedom of expression. It does not matter that judges have disagreed. Judges are not infallible; they have been wrong in the past and are wrong again, as will be ultimately proven.
It is your moment to stand for what is right even if it is hard. It was harder for the veterans who had to endure the ugliness of war, many dying to preserve our freedoms. You have only to vote correctly. It is your watch now, people have spoken. Let it not be said that you gave in to the Taliban types hostile to our Christian heritage. Will the city of San Diego allow the unprecedented action of tearing down a cross; a cross symbolizing the sacrifices of our veterans? Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13) Laying down your life is not asked of you. You only have to vote yes to continue to fight for freedom. Those attending
the Roe v Wade celebration strained to listen as she spoke softly in a faltering voice.

“I’m here to tell my story. This is not easy since it was a very difficult time in my life.

Todd and I had been together for three years when I became pregnant quite

unexpectedly. We both knew the timing was all wrong. We were just beginning our very

demanding careers. He offered to pay for the procedure to solve the problem. Only then,

he assured me, would we get our lives back. He was adamant that he would leave me

unless I agreed. I know have the right to choose. I have the right to a safe and legal

abortion.”Her voice began to break as she fought back tears. She remembered Todd’s cold

response. She remembered the day of the abortion ordeal. She had left the clinic empty

and strangely numb. The abortion became their dark unspoken secret. She and Todd later

separated. The unexpected grief and pain were unshakeable as she buried

herself in her legal career.

The crowd cheered as they acknowledged the banner flying high in the sky which
proclaimed their love for Dr Tiller as a national treasure. Tiller is the well known late term

abortion doctor in Wichita, KS. Tami quietly slipped away into the crowd.

In another state, Maria hugged little Sarah. The two year old had Maria’s mother’s eyes

and her father’s smile. Maria’s days were full of joy with little Sarah’s wonderment at the

simplest things – a flower, a bee, an ant, some white chocolate. The Justice Alito hearings

abortion focus made Maria shudder at the thought of life without Sarah.Almost three years before, Maria had come to the clinic early that morning. Afraid of her

family’s reaction, she had hidden her pregnancy. In secret, she had come for her

procedure to solve the problem. While in the waiting room she noticed a gentle lady with

kind eyes sitting next to her. In a caring and clear voice, she shared a brochure with Maria.

She explained to Maria that her baby was alive and deserved a chance to live. Then she

showed Maria some horrendous pictures of mangled aborted baby bodies.. Maria could no
longer stand it. She got up suddenly and left the clinic.

At best, her relationship with Mark was rocky. Yet little Sarah was able bring out the best

in Mark. Maria was feeling hopeful about the future as she kissed Sarah now napping

next to her.The above accounts are taken from actual events. The names and places have been

changed to protect privacy. Like Tami and Maria, as we remember 33 years of abortion

on demand, our society has a choice to make. We can choose death and despair or life

and hope. For the sake of all those other little Sarahs it’s time to give life a chance.
The End

Forget Me Not

A Plea to the CRP (California Republican Party)

Please Forget Me Not!

I’m so small, not easily seen or heard,
A baby, with no voice nor choice, so absurd.

Mother Earth has rights, animal rights, even criminal rights,
Yet they say it’s all settled, those Roe v Wade fights.

Baby condors, snails and whales have defenders,
I’m, a glob, a pregnancy by-product, what pretenders!

My blood is sought, for many dollars bought,
Who will cry out for me, please forget me not.

Be quiet, don’t bring up the thorny “A” issue
Don’t rock the boat for a little bit of tissue.

But I have no voice, no choice, nothing to say,
By their CHOICE, my life is taken away.

Mom, Dad, please let me live life and see days light,
Don’t let the womb be my tomb, I’m worth the fight!

My blood is sought, for many dollars bought,
Who will cry out for me, please forget me not!

California Republican Party 2000 – 2003 Platform
The Sanctity of LifeWe note Thomas Jefferson's sentiment that "the care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government," and that the United States Constitution guarantees no one "be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law." Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. The infamous decision has resulted in over 43 million dead unborn children. Beyond those grisly numbers and the countless walking wounded victims of abortion, the value of life has been dramatically cheapened. Almost weekly the sorry headlines assault the heart. A quick searchof headlines reveals the depth of the problem:
Woman who killed baby in microwave gets 5 years in prison;
Man sentenced in death of 5 month-old son;
Baby's body found in shallow grave;
4 month-old suffocated;
Man denies murdering baby;
Child left in van by sitter dies;
Father arrested in death of infant son;
Mother of baby found dead remains in jail;
Infant found dead in tribal septic pool;
Teen admits role in death of newborn;
Tot tossed from car;
Infant's body found in laundry;
2nd dead newborn washes up on beach;
A "woman's right to choose" today a sacred right, that held so much promise for the liberation, salvation of women has become a cruel joke. A cruel joke on women because abortion devastates women both emotionally and physically. Latest examples include a recent Finnish government funded study found that women who abort are approximately four times more likely to die in the following year than women who carry their babies to term. Research evidence has resulted in even pro-choice researchers acknowledging the reality of Postabortion Syndrome. Team leader Dr. Brenda Major found PAS in 1.4% of a sample of women who had aborted two years earlier. Even at this underestimated rate it could mean over half a million women afflicted. Yet another study reveals a link between abortion and breast cancer. "BreastCancer: Its link to abortion and the birth control pill" is a new book of the six year study by Chris Kahlenborn, M.D. Most ironic is that many men avoid the responsibilities of fatherhood by using abortion as a tool. Women are coerced and pushed to abort their babies by their boyfriends, husbands or fathers. It is no coincidence that statistics document the most pro-abortion group to be young men ages 18-25, not women.
The election of George W. Bush signals a wind of change to come. A nation weary of the pro-death Clinton administration longs for the hope of life to shine. These signs are reflected in the latest Zogby poll that found a majority of Americans believe abortion destroys an innocent life and is manslaughter. The new President Bush has the opportunity to set the tone of his administration to respect all human life. Bush can begin the national healingby immediately turning around those Clinton policies the have made the US oneof the most pro-abortion countries. He can reinstate the Mexico City policy that bars the use of American funds for groups promoting or performing abortions around the world. He can sign the bill banning the horrific procedure of partial-birth abortions. He will be able to promote families by encouraging adoptions and parental notification in cases of abortion for minors.
Twenty-eight years of abortion on demand has brought us horrors few imagined possible- abortion for reasons of gender selection, late term abortions, partial-birth abortions and live birth abortions. Thankfully, the American people have had enough and look forward to a restoration of that most sacred right- Life.

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
Blowing with the wind of change

(Wind of Change, Scorpions, Klaus Meine)

Lo Siento Elian

So much has been written about the unfolding Elian drama, yet so little truthabout life in communist Cuba has been revealed. Education in this area isalmost non-existent. As an American whose parents came from Cuba, the current hideous Cuban state is an ugly memory not usually brought up in casual conversation. Yet Elian's case has demonstrated what happens when people forget or worse, never knew. I find it astounding that most Americans have little concept of life totally without freedom. Liberty is that God given gift that is every human being's desire and right. Although it is ours here as natural as breathing, freedom has been lost in Cuba.

The basic human freedoms that we take for granted including freedom of speech, religion, of the press, choice in jobs, educationand travel, right to own property, right to bear arms, and to assemble or protest; the Cuban people have none of these. The bad situation is worsened by extreme poverty brought about when the human spirit is shackled, existing without opportunity or hope.

Dictator Castro, aided by Clinton, Reno and leftist media accomplices have distorted the real issues involved here. It is not about family values orparental rights. In Cuba, the people have none. In fact, just earlier this week Cuban government spokesperson, Luis Fernandez, bluntly announced, "He(Elian) is a possession of the Cuban government. No other entity can remove this." The Cuban Constitution, of course, gives the government total powers to dictate how children will be raised. This case is about a little boy, whose mother gave her life so that he could be free in the U.S.
Would we send back a little black boy to the slave master if his mom had died taking him on the Underground Railroad? Would we send back a little Jewish boy whose mom had died to save him from the Nazis? Would we send back to East Germany a boy whose mom gave her life to get him across the wall to a free West Germany? No decent person would. Elian's anguish is now compounded since this innocent child has tasted ther ich fruit and known the joys of freedom.
To send him back now, constitutescruel and unusual punishment. In the island prison of Cuba, Elian would lose his milk ration next year as happens to seven-year-olds in Cuba. At age twelve, he would be required to go away to school in the country. Half the day is spent in classes and the other half working in the fields. His weekend family visits are a reward not a right. He could lose it if he is caught sneaking bread from the kitchen or questions Communist theory. Eating beef isa rarity and chicken or eggs are available a handful of times a year. The smells of kerosene, sewage and stench of garbage are common in Cuba. Many have no toys, washing machines, proper eyeglasses, toilets or sinks. (For more details on life in Cuba beyond the tourist routes, Emily J. Minor's, March 2000 "Seven Days in Cuba" account in The Palm Beach Post paints a vividpicture.)
If they had any, Clinton and Reno would die of shame for their betrayal of the principles of freedom. Still it should come as no surprise since they are the authors of Waco and the guardians of the gruesome procedure, partial birth abortion. Ironic for an administration that does everything "for the children"Lady Liberty will weep if we allow Clinton and Reno to deport Elian back to the island prison that is Cuba. Lo Siento Elian. Your mother's ultimate sacrifice deserved so much more!

*Lo Siento is I'm sorry in Spanish
